General Cleaning Guidelines
We practice “Leave No Trace” while you are in the studio, so the next member has a clean space to begin their creativity.
Clean up your work area when done working. Including wheel, splash pan, stool, the floor surrounding your wheel, bucket, any studio tools, studio bats, tables, and any other handbuilding tools/molds, must be fully cleaned and returned prior to leaving the studio.
Studio bats and other tools may be used, but must be fully cleaned and returned prior to leaving the studio.
Do not do any scraping or sanding in the studio, as it creates hazardous dust. We encourage wet sanding. You can dry sand outside with a mask.
No brooms will be permitted for use in the studio space, as it releases hazardous dust into the air. Instead, utilize a squeegee or wet mop.
Do not let large amounts of water sit on table tops and other wood surfaces, as it will warp the wood.
There is ABSOLUTELY no clay or glaze material to be washed in the bathroom sink. Use the studio clay sink in the community area for filling buckets, cleaning, and anything clay/glaze related. Wash any clay/glaze from your hands before entering the bathroom.
A fee may be charged to cover any mess left behind, damage, or loss resulting from improper studio use.
Kiln & Firing
Cone 6 clays are only to be fired at The Mud Hole. Clay that is fired above or below cone 6 will not be acceptable.
Greenware is always fired at Cone 04, and our glaze kilns are fired to Cone 6.
Never open, touch, or unload any kilns without permission from an owner.
Firing schedules are subject to change according to the quantity of work that is ready to be fired.
No-name pieces without an appropriate signature will not be fired.
Do not store greenware work that is visibly wet or not BONE DRY on bisqued shelves.
Glazing Guidelines
Before glazing, each member must go through a separate glazing orientation with the Mud Hole team. If items are added to the glazing shelf and the Mud Hole team advises that orientation has not been attended, items will not be fired until completion of orientation.
Provided paper must be placed on the countertop prior to beginning glazing your items.
The Mud Hole will provide six different studio glazes at all times. Glaze colors may change periodically depending on usage.
Members are welcome to purchase and utilize their own Cone 6 glazes.
All pieces must be waxed.
A cookie or kiln diapers must be placed with every piece placed on the glaze rack to be fired. The cookie or kiln diapers must be slightly larger than the piece itself to accommodate dripping. If the kiln loader notices a cookie is not placed, the item will be returned to your space and will not be fired until a cookie is provided.
Do not contaminate glazes by utilizing dirty tongs, brushes, whisks, etc., without thoroughly cleaning the item prior to the next use. Contamination between glaze buckets can ruin an entire batch of glaze. If a glaze batch is ruined as a result of improper use, members may be charged for the materials and the time it takes to replace it.
Lids must be replaced on all buckets after each use.
Do not use your own brushes in the glaze buckets. If you need to brush glaze on, pour some glaze into a smaller container, then discard the small amount of glaze.
